The Science Behind the Network
In 1929, Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy proposed that any two people on Earth could be connected through a chain of acquaintances with no more than five intermediaries — six connections in total. This became known as the Six Degrees of Separation.
In the 1960s, psychologist Stanley Milgram tested this experimentally by asking people in Nebraska to get a letter to a stranger in Boston using only personal connections. The letters arrived in an average of just 5.2 steps.
With modern social networks and billions of connected devices, research suggests the average distance between any two people online has actually shrunk — to as few as 3.5 degrees.
